big bear proper, the city and ski resort, we were talking about where he stole this car. we are now on the opposite side of that mountain. basically, we took highway 38 around and i will show you, we came down from this way, down this road and we were basically stopped here. this is where they're stopping all mediaen and all traffic at this point because it is just about two and a half miles down the other direction, if we were to continue, two and a half miles down that way is where that cabin is where he is said to be barricaded, holed up, pinned down. if you can take a look around, you can see this is not a heavily populated area. this is the back country here in the san bernardino mountains and you know, the vast wilderness that we are talking about here is quite large. so you know, if there was by some odd chance for him to, you know, hide and run away somewhere, there is so much terrain, so many trees. this is what officers and search crews and s.w.a.t. teams have been dealing with for the last several days. they have been doing ground searches here in the snow, in

you have to look at the largest reward ever offered in the history of this city and region. you had all sorts of agencies coordinating, and in fact, the agency that began the whole standoff today was the fish and wildlife who got involved in the chase and the shootout with dorner, so they were coordinating with the deputies involved in the gunfight and the lapd, and so many people involved in this that it is quite confusing. >> just to give a sense of the enormity of what to take on. two different carjackings, hostages and two shootouts and three branches of law enforcement involved and now jens, we are left with this conflicting situation where the lapd is saying that we don't know that he is in there and to prove that we think that he may not be in there, we will keep all of the security precautions from the man targeted by these men up and going and then the san bernardino office who seems to have removed the perimeter and allowed the traffic to flow, and very conflicting information. thank you for the reporting throughout the day and i am sure that we will speak to you a

local, city, state, federal involved here. you have been at the press conferences all day. you are coming from the san bernardino sheriffs office. let's play a little sound from cindy bachman at one of the press conferences. here it is. >> we had reason to believe it was christopher dorner because he victims of the car theft said the suspect that stole their car looked like him and his actions after stealing the vehicle led us to believe even stronger that it was him. we have not confirmed that it is him. >> you have to remember, this is a very confusing situation. a lot of different law enforcement involved. this happened randomly. they hadn't been tailing this suspect. what happened essentially in short hand format is they got a report from people who had their pickup truck hijacked. the people who were driving the vehicle said they identified the man who did it as christopher dorner, the excop, the subject of this manhunt. that of course triggered the suspicion of wildlife and game officers who were there. they wound up getting in to a fire fight with this suspect. they

tell me about the mood out there in the city. your readership, and why this has been such a grabber, even as it developed in the beginning with this fellow with a grievance against the lapd. he claimed it was a racist situation. that hasn't been backed up by anyone that involved him going on this murder rampage of killing four people now allegedly. and perhaps going to kill more. tell me about the readership you've got whom. you talking to out there? people seem to be rapt in their attention. >> very much so. the lapd holds a pretty -- people are fascinated with the lapd to begin with. there is a sort of base level of interest that runs in the city for the lapd. it is a storied institution. it has a very infamous and famous past. so you start out from that, and you add on to a story like you outlined that really hollywood couldn't make up if they tried. it has all the elements of a movie that we probably will see some day in the theaters when screenwriters get ahold of it. but it has been a story that the city has gripped on to.

we should follow the example of the new york city nurse named menchu sanchez. when hurricane sandy plunged her hospital into darkness, she wasn't thinking about how her own home was faring, her mind was on the 20 precious newborns in her care and the rescue plan she devised that kept them all safe. we should follow the example of a north miami woman named desilene victor. when desilene arrived ahead her polling place, she was told it might be six hours. at time ticked by, her concern wasn't about her tired body or aching feet, but whether folks like her would get to have their say. hour after hour, a group of people stayed in line to support her. because desiline is 102 years old and they erupted in cheers when she finally put on a sticker that said i voted.3 f1 there is desiline. we should follow the example of the police officer named brian murphy. when a gunman opened fire on a sikh temple in wisconsin, brian was the first to arrive, and he did not consider his own safety. he fought back until help arrived and ordered his fellow officers to protect the safet
